Yes — the electrical work has to be done by someone holding the appropriate NSW licence. But that isn’t the same as saying you need to go out and hire a separate electrician.

A properly qualified air-conditioning professional may be authorised to carry out certain electrical work associated with air-conditioning systems. And there’s a second requirement people forget entirely: split systems involve refrigerant, and whoever handles that part needs the appropriate refrigerant-handling licence.

So the question to ask isn’t “is my installer an electrician?” It’s whether the people doing each part of the job hold the licences that part requires.

Who can legally install a split system in Sydney?

A standard installation is several different kinds of work bundled into one appointment.

It also explains that those licences can cover certain associated electrical wiring — disconnecting and reconnecting components, repairing electrical components, minor wiring alterations.

The scope is the thing to watch. That associated work relates primarily to servicing and maintaining air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. Broader changes to your home’s electrical installation are electrical work, full stop.

So do you actually need to book an electrician?

Most Sydney installations involve electrical work of some kind. Whether you need to organise a second contractor is a different question, and a good installation company should have worked out the answer before the job starts.

Broadly, three things can happen.

The supply is already fine. Sometimes the required circuit and infrastructure are already sitting there. The licensed technician may only need to do electrical work that falls within their own licence scope, and there’s no reason for you to arrange anyone else.

A new circuit is needed. Common enough that it should come up during quoting. A new air conditioner often wants its own supply from the switchboard, and installing a new circuit isn’t just connecting the unit — it changes the fixed electrical installation. That needs someone licensed for electrical work.

The switchboard needs attention. Older Sydney homes complicate things. An installer may look at the board and find the existing setup isn’t suitable for the proposed unit, which means further electrical work before anything can be safely connected.

That third scenario is exactly why the switchboard should be looked at during quoting rather than on installation day. Nobody enjoys standing under a brand-new air conditioner while someone explains that it can’t be turned on yet.

What are the electrical requirements?

There’s no universal answer, because split system electrical requirements shift with the job.

What actually determines them: the capacity of the unit, the manufacturer’s electrical specifications, the existing switchboard, available circuit capacity, cable requirements, where it’s being installed, whether a suitable circuit already exists, and the general condition of the home’s electrical installation.

A small bedroom unit and a large system serving an open-plan living area don’t necessarily land in the same place.

Which is why buying purely on cooling capacity can bite you. The installer has to answer two questions, not one: can this unit cool the room properly, and can the property safely supply the electrical load it needs?

Does a split system need a dedicated circuit?

Often, yes. Many permanently connected split systems need a properly designed electrical supply, and a new dedicated circuit may be required depending on the unit and what’s already installed.

But don’t apply a blanket rule yourself. The correct arrangement comes from the equipment specifications, the manufacturer’s installation instructions, the home’s existing electrical installation and the applicable electrical requirements.

If a new circuit is needed, that’s precisely the sort of detail you want in the quote. So ask directly:

“Does this price include the electrical connection and any new circuit you expect will be required?”

One question, and suddenly comparing quotes gets much easier.

Can the air conditioning installer do the electrical work?

Sometimes — within the scope of the licence they hold. This is where a lot of online advice gets sloppy.

NSW Government guidance states that air-conditioning and refrigeration licences allow specified associated electrical wiring work relating to servicing and maintaining air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment. That covers things like testing control and power circuits, disconnecting and reconnecting permanently connected components, replacing certain electrical components, repairing cable terminations, repairing defective wiring and minor alterations to electrical wiring. The guidance also says a person must hold an air-conditioning, refrigeration or electrical licence to perform this associated work.

Installing or changing the broader fixed wiring system is a different matter. NSW guidance on fixed electrical equipment specifically separates fixed electrical wiring and changes to an electrical installation from restricted disconnection and reconnection work.

You don’t need to memorise licence categories to navigate this. Just ask:

“Who’s doing the electrical work, and are they licensed for the work required at my property?”

Any professional installer will answer that without hesitation. Hesitation is itself informative.

What about the refrigerant side?

Just as important, and more often overlooked.

A split system is an indoor unit, an outdoor unit, and refrigerant lines connecting them. Refrigerant handling is regulated nationally, separately from anything NSW requires.

The Australian Refrigeration Council currently lists a Restricted Heat Pump – Split Systems Installation and Decommissioning Licence, known as RSS03, which lets eligible holders install and decommission a single-head split system under 18 kW. A full refrigeration and air-conditioning refrigerant-handling licence covers broader work.

Which means hiring an electrician isn’t automatically enough. An electrician may be perfectly qualified for electrical work without having any authority to handle refrigerant. And someone permitted to handle refrigerant doesn’t automatically hold an unrestricted electrical licence.

Best to think of a split-system installation as one job with several regulated components, each needing the right person.

The six parts of a proper installation

1. Correct sizing. The unit has to suit the room, and bigger isn’t better. A good installer weighs floor area, ceiling height, window area, sunlight, insulation, orientation, how many people use the room and what it’s used for.

2. Indoor unit placement. It needs space for airflow. Putting it wherever it looks tidiest can leave you with awkward airflow or a corner of the room that never gets comfortable.

3. Outdoor unit placement. The condenser needs ventilation and access. Where it goes also drives noise, pipe length, maintenance access, appearance and cost.

4. Refrigerant pipework. The two halves have to be correctly connected and commissioned, by someone authorised to handle the refrigerant involved.

5. Condensate drainage. Air conditioners pull moisture out of the air and that water has to go somewhere sensible. Planned properly at installation, it’s a non-issue. Improvised later, it’s a stain on your wall.

6. Electrical supply. Might be simple. Might mean a new circuit, additional protection, cable work or switchboard changes — which is why the switchboard belongs in the quoting conversation.

A 2026 Sydney example: why the electrical work changes the quote

A Canterbury homeowner compared two quotes for the same large living-room split system. The gap between them was $1,900, and the cheaper one looked considerably more attractive.

It excluded the electrical connection.

Before you accept anything, you should be able to see:

  • how much standard pipework is included
  • the condensate drainage arrangement
  • brackets and mounting requirements
  • the electrical connection
  • whether a new circuit is included
  • whether switchboard work is expected
  • removal of the old unit, if there is one
  • commissioning
  • labour warranty
  • total price

You shouldn’t be finding out about major exclusions while someone is drilling your wall.

What does installation cost in Sydney in 2026?

No single figure is useful, because installations vary so much.

That last item is the one worth chasing. When you’re comparing prices, ask what’s included electrically.

Does my home need a switchboard upgrade?

Not necessarily. A house being old doesn’t prove the switchboard needs replacing.

That said, older Sydney homes often warrant a closer look when significant new equipment is being added. Your installer or electrician will consider the switchboard’s condition, available capacity, existing circuits, electrical protection and what the new unit requires.

A switchboard upgrade shouldn’t be an automatic add-on to every quote. If one is recommended, ask why it’s needed and what the work involves. A straight answer is reasonable to expect.

Can I mount it myself and get an electrician to connect it?

Generally, no — and this misunderstanding comes up a lot.

A split-system installation is considerably more than putting two boxes on a wall. In NSW, air-conditioning and refrigeration installation work is itself regulated specialist work. NSW Government guidance updated on 23 June 2026 states that a licence or certificate is required to carry out air-conditioning and refrigeration work, other than certain self-contained plug-in appliances. Refrigerant handling is controlled separately through the national licensing system.

So bringing in an electrician afterwards doesn’t retroactively make an unlicensed installation compliant. For a wall-mounted split system, use licensed people from the beginning.

Do portable units follow the same rules?

No, and the distinction matters.

A portable air conditioner that plugs into an ordinary power point isn’t the same category of installation as a fixed split system. NSW’s definition of regulated air-conditioning work specifically excludes a self-contained single-phase plug-in domestic system.

A wall-mounted split is different because it normally involves permanent installation, refrigerant pipework and a proper electrical connection.

How to check an installer is properly licensed

Ask for the licence details before you accept a quote. For a Sydney split-system job there may be both state and national credentials in play.

The NSW licence. Air-conditioning and refrigeration work is specialist work. Companies or partnerships contracting or advertising to perform it are required to hold appropriate contractor licensing, and a licensed company must have a nominated qualified supervisor.

Refrigerant credentials. Check that whoever is doing the refrigerant work holds the appropriate refrigerant-handling licence.

The electrical side. If the job needs a new circuit, new fixed wiring, significant alterations or switchboard changes, ask who’s completing that work and under what electrical licence.

You don’t have to become an expert in licensing categories. You just need enough to confirm every regulated part of the job is covered by someone entitled to do it.

Seven questions before you book

  1. Is the electrical connection included? Don’t assume. Ask.
  2. Will I need a new circuit? The installer may need to inspect before answering.
  3. Is switchboard work expected? If yes, get it itemised.
  4. Who’s doing the electrical work? And are they licensed for it?
  5. Who handles the refrigerant? That requires its own licence.
  6. Is standard pipework and drainage included? Know where the extras start.
  7. What happens if additional electrical work is discovered? Agree how variations are handled before the job, not during it.

Red flags

“No licences are needed, it’s only a small air conditioner.” A fixed split system is not treated like a plug-in portable.

“You can mount everything yourself and I’ll just connect the power.” The air-conditioning and refrigerant portions are regulated too.

“We’ll work out the electrical cost when we get there.” Genuine surprises do happen on site. But the obvious factors — the existing switchboard, likely circuit requirements, where the unit is going — are all things that belong in the planning, not the invoice.

The licensed air-conditioning installer handles the installation within their licence scope — equipment positioning, pipework, the air-conditioning installation itself, commissioning, and appropriately authorised associated work.

The refrigerant-licensed technician handles regulated refrigerant work within the scope of their refrigerant licence.

The licensed electrical worker is needed wherever the job goes beyond the limited associated electrical scope of the air-conditioning licence — new fixed wiring, a new circuit, that sort of thing.

Sometimes one person holds more than one of these. Sometimes a company sends different tradespeople on different days. Either is fine.

As the homeowner, you don’t need three separate appointments. You need one contractor who has organised the right qualified people.
